The shortage of IT professionals is easing in Switzerland

In 2024, Switzerland’s shortage of skilled workers, particularly in IT roles, is easing after peaking in 2023. Fewer job openings and rising unemployment contribute to the shift. However, the shortage remains higher than pre-Covid-19 levels, according to Adecco’s latest report.

Shortage of Skilled Workers in Switzerland Eases, Especially in IT Professions

The shortage of skilled workers in Switzerland, which peaked in 2023, is now declining, particularly in IT professions, according to the new shortage index published by Adecco Switzerland.

Situation Easing, Especially for IT Roles

The situation is easing, especially for IT specialists, as noted in Adecco's 2024 report. The shortage is less pronounced for roles such as software developers, software analysts, system administrators, database specialists, and webmasters.

Economic Factors Impact the Situation

This decline is attributed to economic factors. There are fewer job openings, and the unemployment rate is rising. For instance, the number of software developers looking for work has increased by 46% compared to last year, while job openings have decreased by 22%.

Companies Exercising Caution Amid Economic Uncertainty

James Peck, VP at Adecco, explains that economic uncertainties, high costs, and shrinking margins are prompting companies to be more cautious with investments, particularly in IT projects and research. These are often the first areas to be cut during tough economic times.

Shortage Still Above Pre-Pandemic Levels

Although the shortage of skilled workers in Switzerland has eased, it remains higher than the levels observed before the Covid-19 pandemic, reflecting ongoing pressure in the labor market.
